2014 Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebration was held by Buddhist Community Center Letchworth (BCCL) on 19th April 2014 at St. George’s Church Hall, Common View, Letchworth Garden City. The distinguish guests were Mr. H.M.K. Herath, The First Secretary of Sri Lankan High Commission, London and Dr. Mrs. Kokila Vaidyarathne, Minister, of Sri Lankan High Commission, London.

The Chief Incumbent Most Rev. Dediyawala Wimala Thero, accompanied by the resident Rev. Monk Mathugama Palitha Thero commenced the celebration by observing the five precepts and a short sermon highlighting the importance of celebrating the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. Mr. Roshan Jayakody, the president of the BCCL delivered the welcome speech followed by a short speech from Mr. H.M.K. Herath, the first secretary of Sri Lankan High Commission.

Highlights of the event comprised of traditional Sri Lankan outdoor sports, Sri Lankan classical music and dancing performed by children and young adults of the Dhamma class. The performances were guided by the popular musician Mr. Roshan Jayakody with the support of several parents of the children who performed various events. The day’s events were conducted by the well known master of ceremonies Mr. Aravinda Pathirathnage and Miss. Maneka Jayawardane covered the English commentary. The Venerable monks blessed the guests by anointing of herbal oil.

The event was well attended by Sri Lankans living in The UK and local residence. The Venerable Monks, the management committee of BCCL and the organizers, wish to extend their appreciation for all those who attended and extending their support for making this event a great success and look forward for their continued support in the future.
