The Buddhist Community Centre Letchworth (BCCL) held the 2018 Katina Ceremony on Saturday 27th October 2018 at the Free Church Hall, Norton Way, Letchworth Garden City. This year the Katina Poojava (Katina offering) was sponsored by Mr. & Mrs. Amarassoriya and family,  Mr. & Mrs. Weerasekara and family, Mr. & Mrs. P. Perera and family,  Mr. & Mrs. Mallawaarachchi and family, , Mr. & Mrs. De Silva and family, , Mr. & Mrs. Gunathilaka and family, Mr. Priyantha Bandara, Mr. & Mrs. Dharmasena and family, Mr. & Mrs. Gamage and family, Mr. & Mrs. Welengoda and family. Mr. & Mrs. Karavita and family, Mr. & Mrs. Fernando and family, Mr. & Mrs. Kodagoda and family and their friends.

The ceremonial activity commenced at 7.00a.m. By bringing the Katina Robe to the temple, conducted the morning Pooja, and offered the morning alms (heeldhane) to venerable monks. Thereafter, several devotees participated in stitching the Katina robe at The Free Church Hall. All the devotees and Rev. Monks joined the Katina Perehera lead by the traditional Sri Lankan Kandian drummers.

 Ven. Tawalama Bandula  Thero of  London Buddhist Vihara administered the five precepts, followed by the midday Buddha Poojawa conducted by Ven. Viharagala Kusala                Thero.  Thereafter, the mid-day alms (dhane) were offered to Maha Sangha. The punniya anumodhanawa (invoking merits) was delivered by Most Ven. Kaburavala Siri Revatha           Thero. From Scotland Buddhist Vihara.     

Ven. Veligepola Seelavansa Thero. from Sambodi  Buddhist vihara delivered a Dhamma talk in English, for the benefit of young children explaining how the inception of Katina ceremony occurred during Buddha’s time and how it is continuing up to present day. The Maha Sangha participated in chanting the stanzas to offer the Katina Cheewara (Katina robe) to the chosen Ven. Monk. Accordingly, Ven. Sooriyawewa Kusala Thero. received the Katina Robe. Many devotees offered Ata Pirikara and Cheewara to maha sangha.

Twenty-four reverend monks residing in the UK attended the ceremony including Most Ven. Kballeve Sirisumana Thero. From Barking Buddhist temple, Most. Ven. Hadupelpola Mahinda Thero & Ven Pitigala Mahinda Thero from Kingsbury temple. Most Ven weligepola Seelavansa Thero & Ven Madugalle Mahanama Thero from Sambodi Buddhist Vihara, Most Ven Tavalama Bandula Thero & Ven Kalugamuwe Kassapa Thero from Landon Buddhist Vihara, Most Ven Keppetiyagoda Gunawansa Thero, Ven Mapalagama Soratha Thero, Ven Unapane Soratha Thero, Ven Udunuwara Indarathana Thero, Ven Bogammbara Mitrirathana Thero, Ven Kanumulgoda Wimaladhamma Thero from Jetawana Buddhist Temple, Most Ven Kaburawala Siri Revatha Thero from Scotland Buddhist Vihara, Most Ven Teldeniyaye Amitha Thero, Ven Anamaduwe Wimalajeeva Thero, Ven Nepale Suvachaseela Thero. From Shanti Buddhist Vihara, Most Ven Matugama Palitha Thero From Cambridge Buddhist Vihara, Ven Kohukubure Siridhamma Thero, Ven Viharagala Kusala Thero, Ven Hasalaka Sirivimala Thero from Thames Buddhist Vihara, and Ven Terunnasegama Nanda Thero.

 

During the Vass period, The Letchworth Buddhist Vihara carried out several meritorious events every Saturday at the temple premises and a monthly pooja at St. Michaels Church Hall in Letchworth. The devotional services carried out were, including evening Special Buddha Pooja, chanting of Pirith with the leadership of Most Ven. Dediyawala Wimala Thero followed by Dhamma Sermons by invited Rev. monks. Various devotees sponsored these Saturday Poojas.

A special ceremony of colouring the Katina Cheewara (Katina Robe) was carried out with the leadership of Ven. Dediyawala Wimala Thero, on Saturday 15th October.

The event was well attended by the devotees and friends of the temple.
